Are There Any Risks With Dental Implants Treatment?

It is commonly accepted that the best method of tooth replacement available to the modern cosmetic dentist is dental implants treatment. The procedure for this treatment is first of all for a hole to be drilled at the appropriate place in the jawbone and a dental implant made of titanium is inserted into the hole. After the initial surgery, the implant is left for several weeks and during this period the bone and implant integrate which leaves a solid base to attach an implant to.

What is less commonly known is that there are a few risks associated with this treatment. The likelihood of any of these things happening is remote, however the patient still needs to be made aware of them.

To start with, since dental implant treatment involves surgery, it should be mentioned to the patient that the risks associated with any kind of surgical procedure are present. These include post operative bleeding and the risk of infection. Also it is likely that there will be scarring on the gums where the incisions are made.

The patient also needs to be told about the swelling and tenderness as well as possible bruising which can be common after the implants surgery. Although most will find this period relatively stress free, the dentist should provide you with an emergency number to call in case of a post surgical emergency.

There is also a very small chance that an implant can fail. Although this risk is about 1 to 5% depending on the circumstances it can still happen. Usually in these circumstances however, the implant can easily be replaced. In the case of complete failure the dentist will give you a full refund.

The final risk that a patient should be told about is the risk that the inferior dental nerve is damaged during the placement stage of the procedure. This will cause the patient to feel a strange sensation on the lower lip and chin. If you are unlucky and it does happen to you, it may be of some comfort that the sensation will only be very slight and the effect of this will not be visible to others.
